About this event
BMAV members, friends, and neighbors are invited to a conversation with John Nellis and Jim Collins on the 1990s collapse of the Soviet Union, the demise of communism and efforts of donors to support the transition to a market-based system.
BMAV member John Nellis was part of the World Bank's team attempting to aid this transition, focusing on how to reform and privatize Soviet and then Russian enterprises. Rather obviously, neither the donors nor the early Russian reformers got what they wanted and needed. The key issue of why the early hopes and expectations of reformers and donors were not fulfilled, resulting in the today's Putin regime, will be discussed.
Nellis will be interviewed by career Foreign Service Officer, James Collins, Ambassador (Ret.) to Russia during the early reform period.
