About this event
BMAV members, volunteers and friends are invited to join volunteer docent Bob Ferguson on this tour of two special exhibits which have spawned considerable discussion:
Pictures of Belonging focuses on the work of three young women painters of Japanese heritage who were working and studying in Southern California in the years leading up to WWII. The lives and careers of all three were impacted by President Roosevelt's Executive Order 9066 requiring the movement and incarceration of Japanese Americans to internment camps away from the Pacific Coast. The exhibit follows the changes in their art before, during, and after the war.
Shape of Power: Stories of Race and American Sculpture. This is SAAM’s groundbreaking exhibition, featuring 82 artworks created between 1792 and 2023, examining for the first time the ways in which sculpture has both shaped and reflected attitudes and understandings about race in the United States.
Being in the museum before it opens to the public is a magical experience. RSVP required. Carpooling can be arranged. Full Service members, contact us for a ride.
Meet outside the G Street entrance.
