“Renovation” doesn’t begin to capture the transformation of the world’s largest repository of Shakespeare material, which closed for four years to completely transform and expand the facility from its initial 1932 design. Vast new exhibit spaces were carved out from underneath the old Folger. New garden paths are fully accessible, and elevators were added that make all the public spaces of the Folger accessible, including the balcony of the Elizabethan Theatre for the first time. There is also a new café onsite. On display are 82 copies of Shakespeare’s First Folio and a replica of the printing press used to print the First Folio in 1623. Interactive displays allow exploration and connection of the early modern world to contemporary times.
