Photography’s “Birthday” is usually recognized by art historians as January 9,1839, the day when Louis Daguerre presented his new process, which he humbly called the “Daguerreotype”, to The French Academy of Sciences in Paris, creating a sensation among Parisians.
It did not spring to life fully formed but was a result of scientists and artists trying for years to find a method of portraying the world in a more accurate way than was possible with painting and drawing.
In this presentation, we will look at the scientists, artists, and entrepreneurs who took photography from its beginning in 1839 through the early years of the 1840s, when this new technology changed how people viewed the world.
