About this event
While much has changed in international relations over the decades, the constant is that Russia and the U.S. remain the main powers in the Euro-Atlantic community. But the end of the Cold War, the Soviet collapse, and the introduction of new forms of technology pose basic questions about the future of the community. Ambassador James F. Collins and Dr. Naomi F. Collins will discuss their decades of experience with Russia and the former Soviet Union and how much has changed from their graduate student days in 1965 to today. Ambassador (Ret.) Collins was the U.S. ambassador to the Russian Federation from 1997 to 2001. After that, he first joined Akin, Gump, as an advisor; and the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace to lead their Russia-Eurasia program. Before his appointment as ambassador to Russia, he served as ambassador at large and special adviser to the secretary of state for the newly independent states in the mid-1990s and as deputy chief of mission and chargé d’affaires at the U.S. embassy in Moscow from 1990 to 1993. In addition to three diplomatic postings in Moscow, he also held positions at the U.S. embassy in Amman, Jordan, and the consulate general in Izmir, Turkey. Dr. Naomi F. Collins led the the Maryland Humanities Council and then NAFSA: Association of International Educators, and has served on several nonprofit boards. She is author of "Through Dark Days and White Nights: Four Decades Observing A Changing Russia," (available on Amazon) which provides a personal, eye-witness account of the period from the mid 1960s through the turn of the 21st century. Her book was recently made into a YouTube Podcast, "An American in the Soviet Union," by a young scholar, and is available free on the Internet. Join us for light refreshments and socializing, followed by a presentation with time for Q & A. Open to BMAV members, volunteers, friends and neighbors. RSVP by February 13 is required.
