Putin's brutal invasion of Ukraine demonstrated that the US could not only lead but inspire and encourage others to do so, too. Yet the road ahead for US leadership in the world is strewn with major challenges, including a dysfunctional and fiercely polarized political system at home and the emergence of powers large and small that challenge U.S. influence and threaten its interests abroad.
